When Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth
2 departed Fort Lauderdale on April 26, 2002, she carried with her the famous whistle
that guided the legendary Queen Mary through fog-shrouded waters around the
world for more than 40 years. The whistle, one of the most famous sounds in
modern maritime history, is to be installed on the line’s new $800 million
Queen Mary 2, which is under construction and will enter service in early
2004.
Upon the arrival of QE2 in Southampton, England, on
May 18, representatives from the original whistle manufacturer, Kockums of
Sweden, inspected it. The horn will be refurbished if
necessary and then be delivered to the shipyard in France for fitting on board QM2, opposite a brand new,
identical replica. |
